March Flowers

April showers bring May flowers, but March delivers a floral fantasia of its own. Camellia japonicas have burst into bloom from Arizona (pictured) to Oregon and across the southern U.S. And my own “Christmas “ flower, the outrageously showy Amaryllis, has bloomed in March here in Southern Oregon as we receive unseasonable snow and freezing temps.

Guadalajara in western Mexico, known best ofor its famous  “tequila” agave plants wins the prize for funniest funkiest March flora! (see “Mystery Plant” below; photo by Nadine Lefkowitz of Ashland, Oregon) We’ve asked some of our most knowledgeable Master Gardener friends but we still have no ideas as to its identity or even family.

Please post your thoughts here and I’ll name the funky flower identifier winner in next month’s newsletter, Earth News.
