Dancing Deer

Mama deer are very protective of their young. First time mamas can seem a little negligent – as in the the doe in the second video below who is seemingly unconcerned that her fawn can’t reach the apples. (Don’t worry – lots of apples magically appeared on the ground that afternoon in time for fawn dinner!)

But there is no question that mother deers will defend their young from anything that looks or smells like a predator. Including dogs of any size. It is thought that deer can’t distinguish between dogs and their close relatives, wolves. When walking dogs in an urban interface setting, or in the forests, keep them on leash and be aware of approaching deer.

The twins are curious while mama is cautious and papa shows us his impressive rack. None of them, though, can resist the little green apples, big ripe pears or other delectables that Mother Earth is happy to provide in enough abundance for humans and wildlife alike.

Jumping for Joy. And Apples!
